The University of Idaho’s Parma Research and Extension Center marked its centennial on Friday, June 12, with a celebration on-site recognizing a hundred years of agricultural science in service to Idaho’s farming communities.
A Century Rooted in Crisis
The center’s origins trace to 1925, when an alfalfa weevil infestation threatened Parma-area farms and local growers called on University of Idaho entomologists for help. That emergency response eventually grew into a permanent research facility spanning close to 230 acres of row crops, desert land, and orchards — a footprint that reflects decades of expanding scientific work.
Today the center’s scope stretches well beyond pest control. Researchers there now focus on soil health analysis, irrigation system testing, vegetable seed production, pollination studies, and nematode applications, making it one of Idaho’s most active agricultural research sites.
Centennial Festivities
